Instead of raising hands, students use electronic voting machines to respond to the teachers questions during a georgraphy lesson in their fifth grade class at Winding Creek Elementary.

5th grade teacher Penny Izquierdo works with student Katie Canonico on an “active board”, an interactive teaching tool, at Winding Creek Elementary School. The school is one of the first in the area to use these new digital tools in the classroom.

Ernestine Smith is quietly readjusting to life after undergoing a complicated life-saving surgery for pulminary hypertension last year, and is one of the few patients who has recovered from the usually terminal condition. She now enjoys spending time outside with her pets and working on her yard, something she has not been able to do for the last year while recovering from her surgery.

This was an awesome assignment! Redskins fans are insane and the atmosphere was electrifying. We had two shooters, me and Mike Morones, who is a really experienced sports shooter at the paper, who definitely got the best action shots of the night. Yet I think I’m steadily getting better a shooting football with long lenses. Hoping I get another Redskins game this season…

Because of the recent rains, the spillway releases excess water from Smith Lake Reservoir in Stafford County, on Tuesday, September 5th, 2006. “It was way down this time last year,” said Greg Mayers, a Water Treatment Plant Operator inspecting the spillway at the Smith Lake Water Treatment Facility.
