Panama Skate

Vans Skate Tour event in Panama City, Panama.

Went down to practice shooting skating, something I’ve never shot much of before. The combination of great access, nonstop action, and beautiful light made for a fun time. It felt good to just mess around…

Chelsea Knudsen, 17, of Danville, Kentucky, practices her lasso technique on the horns of a wooden “practice bull”, used to warm up before roping steers in rodeo competitions. Chelsea, and her mother Paula, right, practice roping in on their farm outside of Danville to keep their skills sharp for competitions.

The Commonwealth Foxhounds, a traditional foxhunting club based near King George, celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary in 2006 on the centennial of organized foxhunting in Virginia. I spent some time with the club on their hunt, as well as when they train hounds and when they hang out together. Suffice to say both the hunt and the typical post hunt “breakfasts” all involve drinking copious amounts of alcohol. They know how to have a good time.

I shot this late last year and it ran in the Free Lance-Star. We did like a multimedia piece for the story, and these are a selection of images from the larger project.

Cody warms up by pretending to ride a bull backstage.

“I’m gonna conquer that bull”…

That bull is gonna toss ya…

You got eight seconds…

Get ‘er Done!…

Got the wind knocked out of him when he fell off the bull….

Shot a few frames of bullriders at the URA Winter Rodeo in Columbia. I looked for ways of showing bullriding that went beyond the action shots of the rider on the bull, mid-ring. In fact, I wanted to avoid that shot altogether and break the rules a bit.

The whole bullriding shebang lasted less than fifteen minutes. I wish it went longer, as I could have spent all day shooting this!

All Area Portraits

Portraits of the best high school athletes in high-school golf, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, and football this season. These shots ran huge on the front of Sports over five days with in-depth profiles of each athlete.

This portrait series was a lot of fun to do. I had the concept of showing “toughness” in these kids, so I matched it with tough looking industrial textures, and toned the images to match that feel. Having the creative freedom to shoot the thing how I wanted was fantastic. I got a lot of positive feedback from readers on this stuff….

Redskins vs. Jaguars

More Redskins football. Redskins win in overtime over Jaguars with a winning touchdown run by Santana Moss (2nd from the bottom).

This was a blast to shoot as well. I’m getting way better a shooting football, and I got some decent frames out of this one. I used two bodies with the Nikon 400mm and the 80-200mm on. Good stuff. More daily assignment stuff coming soon…

Redskins vs. Vikings

Posted by skywriter12 on 14 Sep 2006 | Tagged as: sports, Free Lance-Star

First Monday Night Football game of the year. Washington Redskins host the Minnesota Vikings. 94,000 people. Vikings win 19-16.

Game day face…

Don’t let your wives see you peeking…

A Native Washingtonian…

I really like the Redskins….

3 and out was the story of the night for the Redskins…

Injured player…

A great takedown…

But it’s not enough….Vikings win…

This was an awesome assignment! Redskins fans are insane and the atmosphere was electrifying. We had two shooters, me and Mike Morones, who is a really experienced sports shooter at the paper, who definitely got the best action shots of the night. Yet I think I’m steadily getting better a shooting football with long lenses. Hoping I get another Redskins game this season…
